Mindfulness: Be Here Now

Staying in the present is a key part of achieving emotional wellbeing and enjoying your life. Our thoughts about what might happen, what did happen, or what should happen often drag us out of the present moment and into feelings of anxiety and sadness. Learning how to "be here now" and appreciate the present can help you feel good again.

I recently had the privilege of speaking with Dr. Danny Penman who has co-authored a new book on how to stay in the present and cultivate mindfulness in your life, "Mindfulness: Finding Peace In A Frantic World." Listen to my latest podcast, where I interview Dr. Penman, to learn more about the research behind mindfulness, how it can help you, and how you can learn skills and techniques to stay in the present moment.

In order to learn more about Dr. Penman's book, and check out some of the free audio downloads he mentioned in the podcast visit his website: http://franticworld.com/

"Love Your Relationship" Podcast: How can I get them to listen?

"Communication Problems" are the number one thing that bring people to therapy. Often, I have people get in touch asking me what they can do to improve communication and feel like they are being heard in their relationship. While the specifics are different for everyone, I can speak to the common mistakes people make that create communication problems. Understanding the problems can help you make positive changes that could start improving your communication and ability to be heard TODAY.

Main Points:

+ All relationships are systems, which means that people react to each other.

+ You can't control your partner.

+ You can choose your own behaviors and improve the system.

"Love Your Relationship" Podcast: When is it time to break up?

You would not believe how many people get in touch with me to ask me if they should break up with their partners or not. Obviously, I can't answer that question for someone. However, I can speak about things that I have found over the years are signs that a relationship can be repaired, and the signs that make me think that a break-up is likely.

Top signs a relationship can be fixed:

+ Deep committment to the relationship

+ Each partner can stay calm enough to take in what the other person is saying.

+ Both people can take ownership of the things they have been doing that are problematic.

+ Both people are willing to make meaningful changes in response to what the other is saying.

When Good Relationships Get Violent

It happens. During a fight, harsh words get said. A door is slammed. Things escalate. Something is thrown. Then.... someone is pushed. The other person shoves back. Fights can get violent fast. This occurs more often than you would think, behind closed doors. This experience is often very scary for both partners, leading people to question their relationship.

In this edition of EveryDay Experts I'm speaking with Dr. Aubrey Austin, a therapist with expertise in Domestic Violence, as she shares her wisdom about the difference between abusive relationships and "circumstantial violence," and how to grow through this experience together. Click on the green ("When Good Relationships Get Violent") link below to hear her speak about different kinds of violence in relationships, what growth in this situation looks like, and where to go for help.

If you would like to contact Dr. Austin directly, her contact information can be found on her website: www.reachinghope.org.
