10 Tips For a Restorative Vacation

10 Tips For a Restorative Vacation

The Art of Vacationing Well

It is vacation season, and you probably have some getaways planned. (I hope.) But if you are of the “rest is for mortals” mindset, you are not alone. Unfortunately, over half of all salaried Americans don’t even come close to using all their vacation time every year. They feel like they are too busy to take time off, or that a vacation is an unnecessary luxury. Of course, those are the lucky ones. Many more Americans toil on day in / day out without any vacation at all out of necessity rather than self-imposed workaholism.

This is an issue. We deserve to be happier. Research consistently shows that working long hours with no breaks or meaningful downtime leads to lower productivity, increased depression and anxiety, and a reduced ability to solve problems well.  It is a recipe for chronic stress and burnout that takes a toll on your mental health, your work, as well as your personal life. Finding ways to slow down periodically is crucial to your ability to function at your highest and best long term.

But, as we all know, just because you take some time off or get out of town doesn’t necessarily mean that you are going to come back feeling good, rested and restored either. In fact, many people I speak with come back from their “vacations” feeling frazzled, stressed, overspent financially, and exhausted — and then get to enjoy a week or more of playing catch up upon their return.

Not fun.

So today I’m bringing you ten tips that will help you make the most of your hard earned vacation time — whether you travel to exotic lands or just stick around town.

We’ll be discussing how to:

1) Take time off without feeling guilty about it
2) Use your vacation time intentionally and mindfully (focus on health and happiness)
3) Prepare to step out in such a way as to minimize “re-entry stress” upon your return
4) Set boundaries with others (and yourself) so you can relax and be present
5) Learn how to make them positive benefits of your vacation experience last, even after you’re back

And much, much more — all on this episode of the Love, Happiness and Success Podcast.

Reconnecting With Your SELF

A JOYFUL LIFE | Do you ever feel like you’ve lost touch with what really makes you happy? Or like you spend all of your time doing what you have to do, and almost never things that you want to do? Or, like so many people, do you go through your days with a vague sense of dissatisfaction — feeling like even on good days, they could somehow be better?

If so, you’re in good company. So many of our life coaching and therapy clients come to us with exactly this situation: They just want to feel happy. They want to feel good about themselves, and their lives. They want to feel connected to others, and like they have meaning and purpose in their lives.

But they currently don’t.

Too many adults, especially conscientious, hardworking, responsible and successful adults, spend so much time meeting their commitments to others they start to lose sight of who they really are, and what they like to do for fun.

It’s an easy slide: Especially as you “adult,” growing into a career with more responsibility, settle into a marriage, and start welcoming children into the world, you life starts to be more about all the other people you have depending on you than it is about you. Over time it stops feeling like “life is good” and more like, “I have so much to do.” Can you relate? (Lisa raises hand)

Many men and women spend their entire days, morning to night, doing things that they need to do, or to be of service in the lives of others — be it a boss, a business, a spouse or a kid. Even the darn dog needs something!

Who has time for fun?

Sometimes I ask a Denver therapy client or an online life coaching client, “What do you do for fun?” and I get a blank look, a stutter, or a reddening face. (This is especially true of my American clients. I do work with people all over the world for online life coaching and the Europeans with their six weeks a year of paid vacation can often tell me exactly what they do for fun!)

How to Be Happy Again

So this episode of the Love, Happiness and Success is all about YOU: and helping you get reconnected with your authentic happiness so you can experience a more joyful life. As always, I’ll be offering some insight, new ways of thinking, and actionable ideas you can start using today.

Specifically, we’ll be discussing:

  • What the current “science of happiness” has to say about what moves the happiness needle… and what does not.
  • The biggest hidden culprit getting in between you and a joyful life
  • Simple strategies to get reconnected with the real you (who IS still in there!)
  • Why you can’t buy happiness, but where to invest your resources to cultivate more joy
  • Life hacks to make more space in your life for fun and play

I hope this discussion helps YOU reconnect with your true self and what makes you most happy. You deserve it.

All the best,

Dr. Lisa Marie Bobby

How to Deal With Stress and Burnout

How to Deal With Stress and Burnout

“I’m so stressed!”

Have you ever heard the story about how to boil a frog? (Horrible to think of, I know). If you drop a frog into a pot of boiling water, it will jump out immediately. But if you put it in a pot and turn up the heat slowly, it will stay. It becomes accustomed to the new reality… until it’s too late.

Becoming burned out is kind of like that — we often don’t even realize how bad it is until we put the pieces together: “Irritable?” Check. “Joyless and Exhausted?” Check. “Constantly On Edge?” Check. “Can’t Sleep?” Uh huh. “Can’t remember a thing?” Yes.

Helloooo burnout.

We toss around phrases like “I’m totally burned out” or “I’m so stressed” easily, glibly, like they are of small consequence. But, as you know if you’ve been coping with chronic stress, it’s kind of a big deal.

“Burning out” is the layperson’s term for the physical, emotional, and cognitive consequences of chronic stress. It can affect everything in your life, from the way you think, to the way you feel physically and emotionally, to your relationships.

Understanding what stress really does to you, and why it’s important to change, can help motivate you to reclaim your life.

This episode of the Love, Happiness and Success Podcast Denver Therapist and Life Coach Dr. Lisa Marie Bobby will teach you what chronic stress and burnout is, whether you might be suffering with it, and most importantly — what to do to help yourself recover from chronic stress and burnout.

You’ll learn not just stress management techniques, but a new way of thinking and taking care of yourself that will help you become  more resilient, more peaceful, and ultimately more effective.
