“Hunter is amazing and makes me feel human. He laughs with me and talks to me like I’m a person who matters. He makes me feel like he genuinely cares, and I don’t feel like I’m talking to a robot with no emotions. I really like that we’re just two humans talking, but he has the knowledge and skills...

Therapist Overview

Hello, I’m Hunter Tolman and I’m excited to partner with you in your journey towards a happier and more fulfilling life.

My passion is helping people just like you reach their highest potential both individually, and in their most important relationships. Whether we work together in couples counseling, family therapy, individual therapy, or life coaching, my focus will be understanding your deepest desires for your marriage, your family, and yourself so that I can help you create your most gratifying life. Our work can help you heal, gain understanding and compassion for yourself and others, and live with intention.

Couples Therapy & Relationship Coaching

I specialize in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT), an effective, evidence-based form of couples counseling. I draw upon techniques from EFCT to inform my relationship coaching work as well.

I believe the purpose of couples therapy can be summed up in one word: connection. Everyone on this planet has an innate need for connection from birth to death. Partnered relationships can be our primary source for getting that need met and I enjoy deepening couples’ sense of connection in couples therapy.

I work with couples to find ways to reconnect and find joy within their relationship. When both members of the couple are involved and engaged in couples therapy or coaching, amazing emotional connections result. Whether you feel that you’re losing your relationship, or you just want to make a few adjustments I can help you heal and strengthen your connection with your partner.

When working with couples, my number one priority is to create a safe environment in which each of you can feel seen, heard, understood, and valued. I then help guide and facilitate conversations that increase safety and trust between you. With increased safety and trust come a heightened ability and willingness to be vulnerable. As you feel safe enough to become more vulnerable, you and your partner can experience an increased sense of connection, intimacy, and joy. When you’re feeling connected and cared for by each other, the day-to-day problems leading to conflict become easy to resolve.

My emotionally-focused approach helps couples reconnect and grow closer together. I help you break free from negative cycles that have been created over time so that you can find hope and happiness. Our work together is intended to help both of you be more open and responsive to each other, and more emotionally engaged, so that you both feel loved and respected.

Family Therapy

I believe that families are central to all that we do. Positive family relationships are at the base of creating a successful society. The primary place for a child to develop and learn is in the home. I am passionate about helping create a healthy atmosphere for all families I work with, as a parenting coach and as a marriage counselor.

Stress in your family life can hinder your ability to succeed in your personal life. Similarly, stress in your individual life can dampen your ability to feel connected within your family. I have experience helping families through many difficulties such as: parent-child relationship problems, life cycle changes, divorce, and sibling conflict.

I work to ensure that each member of the family feels heard. I will help to identify each family member’s basic needs that are and are not being met in the home and help find ways to get those needs met. I strive to create an atmosphere where each member of the family can feel that they matter and are valued in the family unit.

Individual Therapy

In addition to helping you with your relationships, I can also work with you individually. I provide psychotherapy services to clients located within the state of Colorado. I can help you:

  • Process grief and loss, whether it’s over the death of a loved one, or the end of a relationship
  • Heal from painful life experiences
  • Manage mild mental health concerns
  • Learn how to work through painful emotions and achieve a sense of inner peace
  • Repair attachment wounds

If we work together individually, my hope for you is that you can experience the best possible version of your life. I will create a space for you to be heard and understood. I will always be in your corner and see the world through your experiences, but I’m also here to challenge you to grow and try new ways of being that will help you create the changes you desire.

I am passionate about working with individuals with past traumas and helping them regain control of their lives. I aim to create a space in which you can explore the impacts of the experiences you have had at a pace that is most comfortable for you. By helping you feel safe, strong, and secure with yourself I can help you rebuild your life the way you want it.

Life Coaching for Personal Growth

Another branch of my work is helping people through life coaching. If you’re looking to improve your life, identify and achieve your goals, learn new skills that help you get better results, feel more motivated, and obtain greater insight into yourself so you can overcome old patterns, life coaching can help. My role as a life coach is to empower you, encourage you, brainstorm with you, and hold you accountable for making the changes you’d like to create.

Life coaching with me can help you:

  • Achieve personal and professional goals
  • Manage difficult life transitions such as a breakup, divorce or other hard changes
  • Create meaningful connection within yourself and those around you
  • Develop richer social connections
  • Improve your relationships
  • Create a better dynamic in your family
  • Attain health goals
  • Attain financial goals
  • Develop new habits that create success
  • Create a realistic plan of action to create positive change in virtually any area of life you wish to improve.

When we work together in coaching to achieve some of these specific goals or improve your quality of life I will use a combination of techniques including solution-focused strategies, cognitive strategies, and behavioral strategies. I can teach you tools that you can implement, build upon your already established strengths, and help you understand things that challenge you. When coaching I take a more directive approach in teaching and partnering with you to help you reach your highest potential.

About Me

As a therapist, being let into your life to help facilitate the changes you want to make is enriching and fulfilling. I discovered early on in my education that I am most happy when I am helping others mold their patterns and behaviors into their happiest selves. This discovery led me to pursue a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy from East Carolina University.

My education only reinforced my belief that the most fulfilling change comes through improving the ability to connect with others, love others more deeply, and feel more loved: I focus on those three areas in couples therapy and coaching, premarital counseling, family therapy, life coaching, and individual therapy.

I enjoy working with a wide variety of relationships and associations. In order to help you create positive change, I draw from a variety of evidence based therapy models, such as emotionally focused couples therapy, cognitive therapy, solution-focused coaching, and narrative therapy tailored to you and your goals.

Personally, I am married to the most amazing woman and together we have a beautiful daughter. I am originally from Utah but have lived in Utah, Thailand (I am slightly obsessed with the Thai language, culture, food, and people), North Carolina, and Colorado. I enjoy spending my free time outdoors (skiing, hiking, or anything else in the mountains) or playing board and card games with friends and family.

I welcome the opportunity to meet you. Schedule your free consultation session with me, and let’s get started. — Hunter
