Our modern culture offers far fewer built-in community structures than it once did. We used to find friendships through civic groups, neighborhood clubs, churches, recreational leagues, and stable workplaces. Social prescribing flips the script from “What’s wrong with you?” to “What matters to you?”
A therapist, doctor, or social worker helps identify activities you genuinely enjoy or value, then connects you to community opportunities such as:

- Sea swimming groups
- Choirs and singing programs
- Book clubs and cultural experiences

- Nature programs

These are not random social outings. They’re carefully chosen experiences that build human connection through joy, meaning, and shared values.

Glenn and Ryan: A Story of Friendship at 92
One of Julia’s most heartwarming stories involves Glenn, a 92-year-old veteran who had lost nearly all of his close connections. Weeks would pass without him speaking to another person.
Through the VA’s Compassionate Contact Corps, Glenn was matched with Ryan, a volunteer fifty years younger. Despite vast generational and political differences, the two gradually developed a profound and healing friendship.

Research suggests that meaningful movement, nature, art, and service reliably help people feel happier and grow and heal their sense of belonging.
From there, consider one small action that involves another human being – a class, a walk, a club, or a shared practice.
Even 20 Minutes Can Help You Overcome Loneliness
Social wellness often falls to the bottom of the priority list, especially when life feels overwhelming. Yet studies show that even 20 minutes in nature can:
