How to Simplify Your Life
Do you ever feel like you’re getting swept up in the chaos of life? As a therapist and a life coach, I can tell you that it’s very common for people to feel like their to-do list is neverending, and that no matter how many items they check off the list, it doesn’t bring them any closer to creating the life they want for themselves. It’s stressful and unsatisfying to live this way, but it can also be the start of a great awakening. When you start learning how to simplify your life and channel your time and energy in the right direction, everything changes. You will begin to feel less frazzled and more fulfilled, and you will feel better about what you’re doing with your life. And isn’t that what we all want?
When I say “simplify your life,” I don’t mean “clean out your closet” or “sell all of your belongings and follow Phish around in a van” (although any of these choices are totally valid. This is your simplified life, not mine.) I’m talking about a deeper kind of simplicity, the kind that comes from being in touch with your core values and using them as a guide to decide what’s worthy of your attention — and eliminating the many, many things that aren’t.
These ideas are rooted in life design, a framework I love for making big life decisions, like choosing a career, a life partner, or deciding where to live. In this article, we’ll explore how you can apply the principles of life design to simplify your life when it’s feeling overly hectic and under-ly fulfilling.
If you’d prefer to listen to this one, I’ve also recorded an episode of the Love, Happiness and Success podcast on this topic, featuring my guest Bonnie Wan, author of “The Life Brief: A Playbook for No Regrets Living.” You can find the episode on this page, or on Apple podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Step One to a Simplified Life: Clarifying Your Values
At the core of simplifying your life is a clear understanding of your personal values. Take a moment to reflect on what truly matters to you. Create a short list with fewer than ten items that encapsulate your core values. Whether it’s “quality time with my kids,” “being creative,” or “maintaining my physical and mental health,” these values will serve as your compass to eliminating unnecessary tasks so you can focus on what matters.
Evaluate Your Time Management
Now that you know your values, you can make more strategic choices about your how you spend your most valuable resource — your time. Evaluate your daily activities and assess whether they align with your values. If not, it’s time to make some changes. Consider what tasks can be delegated or eliminated altogether, and look especially hard at any areas where you might be flirting with perfectionism; not everything needs to be done flawlessly, and some tasks may not require as much time and effort as you think.

Organize Your Space
Your physical environment plays a significant role in simplifying your life. Take a critical look at your living space and evaluate how it supports your values. Too much clutter can create a mental burden that distracts from what truly matters. It’s not about getting rid of everything, but organizing your space (and in turn organizing your life) can help create calmness and focus, rather than chaos and confusion.
Evaluate Your Relationships
Here’s another area that takes up significant space in your life: your relationships. That’s a good thing! Healthy, fulfilling relationships are at the heart of a life well lived. But consider which relationships that are contributing positively to your happiness and wellbeing, and which are creating unnecessary stress or even pain for you.
Is there a way to direct more of your energy toward friends who fill your cup? Is it time to cut ties with a toxic boss or end an unhealthy relationship? When you audit your time and energy, the answers to these questions become more clear.
