How to Stop Overthinking and Achieve Inner Peace

Let’s be honest: if overthinking were an Olympic sport, I would’ve medaled by age ten. As a counselor and life coach, I come across this often in client sessions too. And attempts to stop overthinking often unintentionally make it worse. You too? Then friend, you’re in the right place.

In a recent episode of the Love, Happiness, and Success podcast, I dive into the mental struggle of overthinking. You know, that endless loop of “should I have said that?”, “what did they mean by that emoji?”, and the late-night replay reel of literally everything you’ve ever done since 7th grade. Yeah. That.

But here’s the deal: overthinking doesn’t mean something’s wrong with you. It actually means you’re thoughtful. Conscientious. You care. (Gold star for you. ⭐)

Still, when those thoughtful qualities go unchecked, they can morph into something a little less fabulous: anxiety, indecision, self-doubt, and good old-fashioned mental burnout.

Let’s unpack this together—and more importantly, let’s learn how to stop overthinking everything and start living with confidence.

Overthinking vs. Anxiety: What’s the Difference?

This is such an important distinction, so let’s break it down.

Overthinking is a cognitive style. It’s how your brain processes information. You’re scanning for possible mistakes, imagining multiple outcomes, asking yourself if you did the right thing. (You probably did.)

Anxiety, on the other hand, is an emotional and physical experience. It’s the racing heart, the sweaty palms, the deep sense of dread that something terrible might happen… even when you’re literally just ordering coffee.

Think of it this way: overthinking is the spinning. Anxiety is the storm. And both can feed off each other if you’re not careful.

The good news? Anxiety is treatable. And overthinking is a skill set you can totally re-train. (More on that in a sec.)

Why Do We Overthink (And Why It’s Not All Bad)

If you’re someone who re-reads your texts five times before hitting send or mentally replays convos from last week, I want you to hear this:

👉 You’re not broken. You’re conscientious.

You value doing a good job. You care about people. You want to be a kind human. And that’s beautiful. But when that thoughtful nature crosses into analysis paralysis and constant worrying, it can make it tough to trust yourself or move forward confidently.

Here’s the thing: all our best qualities have a light side and a shadow. Your attention to detail? Love it. But if it’s keeping you from taking action or sleeping at night, we’ve got some work to do.

How to Stop Overthinking Everything

Okay, let’s talk about the real-deal strategy that can help you stop overthinking everything. I call it mental fitness, and it’s a game changer.

Step 1: Catch it.

Self-awareness is everything. You’ve got to recognize the moment you’re spiraling. When you’re rehearsing the same convo for the 47th time, catch it in the act.

Step 2: Interrupt it.

Say “STOP.” Out loud if you need to. Visualize a giant stop sign. Jump up and do a silly dance. Do three pushups. You’ve got to shake the snow globe and break that thought loop.

Step 3: Shift it.

Now, redirect. Ground yourself in the present. Focus on your breath, a task, a mantra, or even a prayer. The goal is to get out of your head and into your life.

This is not magic—it’s a skill. And like any skill, it gets easier with practice.

How to Stop Overthinking in Relationships

Oh boy. This is the juicy one. Overthinking shows up BIG in our relationships—especially romantic ones. Ever reread a text twenty times, wondering if your partner is mad at you? Or replay a conversation and obsess over your tone?

Here’s what’s usually going on:

You care. A lot. You want to be a good partner or friend. And deep down, you might feel uncertain about the strength of the relationship.

But instead of spiraling, try this: ask yourself, “What am I afraid is true right now?”

Then reality check it. Do you know they’re upset? Or are you guessing? Can you ask them instead of assuming? And if you did mess up? Don’t hide. Own it. Reach out. Repair it. (Need a script? I give you one in the episode!) 💌

This is what emotional intelligence looks like in real life. It’s not about being perfect—it’s about being honest, kind, and willing to grow.

You Are Not at the Mercy of Your Mind

Here’s the truth: your brain is brilliant, but it’s not always right. It’s like a toddler with a marker—lots of creative energy, but needs boundaries.

You don’t have to believe every thought you think. You don’t have to chase every worry. And you definitely don’t have to keep replaying that thing you said three Tuesdays ago.

You can learn to lead your thoughts. Guide your feelings. Choose your behaviors.

That’s what we do in evidence-based coaching. And that’s what I want for you.
