Online Marriage Counseling in Colorado
Online couples therapy is officially now a thing. Online therapy is being welcomed into the fold as a routine way of meeting with clients for therapy and marriage counseling. Online therapy is being discussed in the media (Online Therapy Gains Fans — NPR), it’s being researched and findings are showing that the results for clients are as good (sometimes better) than traditional face-to-face therapy (Psychotherapy Via Internet Is As Good If Not Better Than Face-To-Face Consultations). Above all else– it’s being used by eager clients (When Your Therapist is Only a Click Away).
With all the interest in online therapy, it’s only natural that people would be interested in using videoconferencing for relationship counseling too.
So is it okay to do marriage counseling online?
The answer: A qualified “Yes.”
Online marriage counseling is convenient.
Many couples want to meet for marriage counseling online through video-conferencing, using applications like Skype, FaceTime or Google Hangouts on their laptop. This is especially true for families with young children (who can nap or play in the next room during our sessions). Also, couples in long-distance relationships, or in which one person travels frequently often require being able to meet by video in order to maintain the consistency of their sessions.
Online marriage counseling is effective.
In general, marriage counseling online is absolutely appropriate for couples seeking help with normal, garden-variety relationship problems. For example, wanting to improve their communication, repairing trust in the relationship, wanting to feel more cared for and understood by each other, and seeking solve day-to-day problems around housework, parenting, finances and intimacy.
Online marriage counseling is not appropriate for “high risk” situations.
There are some marriage counseling situations that are considered more “high risk.” These include things like very toxic communication patterns (yelling and screaming at each other), when verbal, psychological or emotional abuse is present in the relationship, or circumstances when one or both partners has a potentially serious mental illness or substance abuse problem. In these situations, in-person, in-office marriage counseling session is more appropriate.
Online relationship coaching helps you find strategic solutions to solve old problems for good.
Relationship coaching is different from marriage counseling, in that it doesn’t seek to resolve long-standing emotional issues between a couple. Relationship coaching provides couples with direction and guidance about how to improve their partnership through strategic, positive action. For this reason, relationship coaching often works beautifully for couples who want to meet online and make their good relationship a great one. Relationship coaching involves structured activities, and assignments that you do in between sessions in order to help you practice what you learn in your sessions. It’s an action-oriented, positive approach that works for many couples — often in only a few sessions.
